IRS Whistleblower Office Honors National Whistleblower Day

By the 91pornWhistleblowerĚýTeam
Ahead of July 30, National Whistleblower Appreciation Day, the Internal Revenue Service Whistleblower Office announced its continued recognition of whistleblowers and the essential contributions they offer to fight fraud. Kudos to the IRS for recognizing the important role that whistleblowers play in protecting our nation from fraudsters.
National Whistleblower Appreciation Day is celebrated on July 30 to commemorate the anniversary of the passing of America’s first whistleblower law by the Continental Congress, on July 30, 1778. Ěý1
The IRS Whistleblower Program
To qualify for an award under the IRS Whistleblower Program, whistleblowers must provide specific and credible evidence of significant underpayment or evasion of tax liabilities. If the IRS uses the information to investigate a matter or dispute that exceeds $2 million at issue (or $200,000 in cases involving individual taxpayers) and takes enforcement action that results in a recovery, the whistleblower may be entitled to receive between 15 to 30 percent of the amount collected. Since whistleblower rewards are only available when the amounts recovered are substantial, previously successful claims have involved corporate tax fraud, large-scale tax avoidance schemes, and fraud by high-net-worth individuals.
The IRS has paid over $1.3 billion in awards since its first award in 2007 through June 2025. This was based on successfully collecting $7.5 billion from noncompliant taxpayers.Ěý2
The Role of Whistleblowers
Acting Whistleblower Office Director Erick Martinez shared: “Whistleblowers serve as an invaluable deterrent against non-compliance with tax laws and are critical in our efforts to reduce the tax gap. The IRS Whistleblower Office is committed to improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the IRS Whistleblower Program through improved service, responsiveness and modernization efforts.”
91pornattorney Ginger Buck commented: “The IRS Whistleblower Office relies on whistleblowers to speak up against fraud. Reporting IRS law violations is critical to upholding the integrity of our tax system.”
The IRS Whistleblower Office’s Recent Multi-Year Operating Plan
The IRS Whistleblower Office released its first multi-year operating plan detailing its priorities, initiatives, strategy, and recent achievements to advance the program. Its six primary efforts include:
- Enhance the claim submission process to promote greater efficiency.
- Use high-value whistleblower information effectively.
- Award whistleblowers fairly and as soon as possible.
- Keep whistleblowers informed of the status of their claims and the basis for IRS decisions on claims.
- Safeguard whistleblower and taxpayer information.
- Ensure that our workforce is supported with effective tools, technology, training and other resources.
Fiscal Year 2024 and 2025 Outlook
In Fiscal Year 2024, the IRS announced it paid $123.5 million in awards from whistleblower claims out of the $474.7 million collected. Last Fiscal Year, the Whistleblower Office established 14,926 award claims. This was an increase of 13% compared to the last four years. Based on the IRS’s April 2025 multi-year operating plan and related initiatives, we are hopeful that these whistleblower recoveries will increase even more.
